In an artwork, an artist tends to lay emphasis on an artwork by putting in more details on a particular corner so as to help explain the story of his work well. Those emphasis can be achieved through hard and soft edges, colour, and texture, etc.

UNITY/VARIETY
Painting looks amazing when it has variety and unity of designs. Unified designs most times are dull and much variety of designs cause chaos too - the skillful use of the two will birth a masterful piece.
